Today's Story

What happened

Clean sources are supplying 49.7% of India's electricity right now, against 48.8% from thermal, with demand at 221 GW. Today's peak clean share so far is 14.3 points above yesterday's peak.

Why it happened

Renewable output is holding steady for now — solar and wind track the sun, so clean share moves in a curve through the day, not a flat number. Thermal — coal and lignite combined — keeps running as the grid's baseload, while hydro at 20.4 GW is what operators lean on to smooth the swings in between.

What to watch next

Demand typically peaks around 4:49 PM, the moment the grid leans hardest on thermal — watch whether clean share holds through that window. Clean share is within 0.3 points of the all-time record of 49.9%.
